What is the role of family and friends, of a recently diagnosed patient? It can be very alarming and overwhelming for a person to discover that he or she has tested positive for DIABETES!!

Calm down, take a backseat and review the situation with a very positive approach. Support of family and friends will be the greatest comfort at this time. As a family member, sympathize with the patient, be completely aware of the medication procedure if insulin has to be administered – family members should be aware of doses, timings must be maintained and sugar levels should be regularly monitored.

LONG-TERM TYPE 2 DIABETICS –WHO OVER THE YEARS HAVE PROGRESSED TO THE POINT WHERE THEY NEED INSULIN INJECTIONS – ONLY ABOUT A THIRD ARE SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING OR ELIMINATING THEIR INSULIN DOSAGES.

Initially, one can expect unusual ups and downs in the sugar levels till the dosage is perfectly determined. Do not panic as this could lead to further upsetting the patient and unforeseen mishaps. Stay in touch with the medical team and update them regularly.

The biggest task for a person diagnosed with diabetes is to deal with the strict diet routine which is prescribed by the dietician. As a family the greatest effort would be to get involved in the diet and plan family meals keeping in mind the diet plan particularly so that the Patient does not feel low and depressed at meal times. Fortunately diabetic meal plans are usually not very difficult to follow and would be great for the family to follow from an overall familial health perspective.

STAY AWAY FROM DRY/HIGHLY PROCESSED/HIGH-CALORIE-DENSE CARBOHYDRATES LIKE PRETZELS, CHIPS, WHITE-FLOUR BREADS, MUFFINS, DRIED FRUITS, DRY CEREALS, CRACKERS, “ENERGY” BARS, CANDY, BAGELS AND POPCORN.

As friends, do not plan too many meal outings, try and plan exercise routines together. Walks, workout classes etc., can become a good way of spending time with each other without dwelling too much on the illness and making the patient uncomfortable.

As the patient, one must be co-operative and accept the change in life with a positive approach and move on!
