Type 2 diabetes will lead to short and long term complications. If effectively managed with focus on diet, exercise, medication and other lifestyle changes, then these complications can be prevented.

Long-term complications of type 2 diabetes are categorized into micro vascular vs macro vascular complications.

Macrovascular complications occur when the large blood vessels are damaged, resulting from buildup of plaque which typically affects the heart, brain and blood vessels.

Poorly maintained blood glucose levels increase the possibility of atherosclerosis (where the blood vessels become clogged up and narrowed by fatty substances).

This may contribute to decreased blood supply to your heart, causing angina (a dull, heavy or tight pain in the chest). The chances of a blood vessel in your heart or brain becoming choked, resulting in a stroke or heart attack is also increased.

Type 2 diabetes may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The more poor your blood sugar control, the greater the risk appears to be. The exact connection between these two conditions still remains unclear.

To prevent heart disease and stroke as a result of diabetes, it is important to manage the condition efficiently. Implement healthy lifestyle changes also in other areas of your life: stop smoking, keep blood pressure under control and pay attention to your cholesterol. If you have diabetes, you’re up to five times more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke.
