Why do people buy fair price coffee instead of “ordinary” coffee?  They are raising socio-economic concerns about slave labour with their food choices. They are using their purchasing power to send a message to the food industry to create change.

 There are problems closer to home. Closer than coffee plantations. The global diabetes pandemic is on our doorstep.  One in every 11 people has diabetes today. Let’s raise our concerns about the pandemic by using our purchasing power to send a message to the food industry to CHANGE!

Cheap snacks with poor nutritional value are positioned to tempt a customer who is hungry and in a hurry. It is unconscionable to say that the customer knows best.  To a certain extent, the customer is a victim of powerful forces.

 Somehow along the way we got lost. Advertising and marketing did not give us the right signposts. So we walked on the wrong road. Now we know we must get back on the right track.

  1. Fight fast food and promote the slow food movement
  2. Instruct school-age children about the dangers of fizzy drinks. Salty things too are loaded with sugar. If it is not fried, it may have less oil but it will have more sugar and salt to compensate.
  3. The pancreas is not accustomed to the amount of sugar and easily assimilated carbohydrates in today’s diet. Educate children and adults.
  4. The food and advertising industries MUST develop a conscience. The food industry cannot keep passing off ingeniously mixed chemicals as “ food”.
  5. Lets go back to simple fresh food with no preservatives or additives or fruit injected with food dye.

There should not be one standard of practice, one attitude towards preventing illness for the rich and another standard for the poor.
